I donated to Doctors Without Borders, but there are many helpful organizations out there! Have you helped out yet?
Here are a couple more suggested organizations, passed on from the foundation begun by my company’s co-founder:
- The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. With estimates that as many as three million people may be affected by this catastrophic earthquake the Red Cross has assessed the priority needs in Haiti are food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. Thousands of local Red Cross volunteers are aiding their fellow Haitians.
- International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs. International Medical Corps’ Emergency Response Teams are providing medical care outside the general hospital near the Presidential Palace where hundreds of people have congregated for help. Medical supplies, such as IVs, pain medicines, and bandages, are extremely limited. In addition to emergency medical care, survivors of the earthquake are likely to be in immediate need of food and water, as well as non-food items like blankets, tents, stoves, and water purification equipment.
